Sorcerer Class Overview

The Sorcerer Class is a master wizard that annihilates its enemies with impressive AoE damage, polished and devastating spells, and three types of elements:

  • Lightning Spells
  • Fire Spells
  • Cold Spells

As a Sorcerer, you can further enhance your spells with the unique class mechanic called Enchantment Slot. You can improve specific Active Skills with passive bonuses for a higher diversity to the loadout and build.

Following up, we'll cover the class archetype, the resource generation, elements, and more information about the Sorcerer Class in Diablo IV!

Class Archetype

In Diablo 4, the Sorceress is a caster that wields three elements: Fire, Ice, and Lightning to devastate everything around with impressive AoE skills and abilities.

Resource

As a Sorcerer, a powerful wizard with impressive spells, you will use a lot of Mana. Each attack requires a specific amount of Mana; the stronger the spell, the more it costs. Mana is a magical regenerative resource that can be increased through different Enchantment slot Effects or items.

Note: You can replenish your Mana Pool by using your Basic Skills!

Damage Type

Sorcerers have the ultimate control over three elements, with a lot of skills based around temporary conditions that can be inflicted on enemies:

  • Lightning – Stuns & Shocks Enemies.
  • Fire – Burns enemies with DoT (Damage Over-Time) damage.
  • Cold – Chills & Freezes enemies.

Skill Groups

All Diablo IV classes have specific Skill Categories, such as Basic and Core skills, but sorcerers have additional groups for Defensive, Conjuration, and Mastery abilities:

  • Basic – Filler skills, which usually cost no Mana.
  • Core – Abilities with no cooldowns, but their most significant drawback is the high cost of mana.
  • Defensive – Crowd Control, Barriers, or escaping Abilities.
  • Conjuration – Summoning abilities.
  • Mastery – Elemental massive AoE abilities.
  • Ultimate – Powerful abilities with big impact but high cooldown.

Skill Examples

  • Chain Lightning – Unleash a stream of lightning that deals x% damage and chains between nearby enemies and you up to 4 times, prioritizing enemies.
  • Frost Bolt – Throw a bolt of frost at an enemy, dealing x% damage and Chilling them for 15%.
  • Frozen Orb – Unleash an orb that Chills for x% and expels piercing shards dealing a total of x% damage.
  • Ice Blades – Conjure ice blades for 6.0 seconds that rapidly slashes enemies for x% damage and has a 20% chance to make them Vulnerable for 2 seconds.

Sorcerer's Barrier

The Sorcerer is the only class that is able to create elemental Shields called Barriers, equivalent to a specific percentage of your base life that grants an additional shield for the incoming damage. Defensive Skills such as Ice Armor and Flame Shield protect the Sorcerer and provide resistance against damage.

Unique Class Mechanic

Each class owns a distinctive mechanic that adds bonuses to the character's skills & abilities. The sorcerer's unique class mechanic in Diablo 4 is called the Enchantment Slot (Enchantment System).

This new addition allows players to add bonuses or effects on the selected skills and customize their abilities further.

Weapons Used

Sorcerer GreatStaff

As a sorcerer, you can equip four types of weapons and offhand:

  • Wand
  • Staff
  • Dagger
  • Focus

The staves are two-handed weapons that can provide a different implicit modifier or stats, which might not be the best option for a specific build. The choice is yours, and everything is dictated by your playstyle and the purpose of the build/character.

Strengths and Weaknesses

In this section of our Sorcerer guide, we'll present the Sorcerer's Pros and Cons in Diablo IV:

Pros Cons
High Damage: The Sorcerer's abilities can devastate the enemies through AoE skills & decimate bosses with massive single-target spells. Glass Cannon: Sorcerers have a very low amount of health and armor, making them vulnerable in close combat, but they deal a lot of DPS that compensates.
Crowd Control: Very powerful CC abilities and ranged attacks that immobilize or stun an enemy. Mana Regeneration: As is their primary resource but also very easy to deplete, you must use mana generation skills to be able to cast your abilities constantly.
Great Mobility (Teleport): Excellent mobility compared to other classes, and teleport allows them to move around the battlefield more easily. Lack of Group Utilities: Sorcerers don't have buffs or benefits to apply to their party members.
Defensive Skills: Not as tanky as other classes, but the Ice Armor, Flame Shield, or Teleport skills make a Sorcerer harder to target or kill. Close Combat Exposure: Very squishy because of their low HP and armor, but if you use the defensive skills wisely, you can succeed in almost any fight.
Hit and Run Capabilities: Summoning abilities can lead enemies to their death by just following your character. Very efficient for farming and saving time. Difficult Positioning: They can be very easily killed due to bad positioning, use your defensive skills as much as you can.

Following up on our Diablo 4 Sorcerer Guide, we'll present the stats prioritization for your class and the bonuses & effects provided by them. Let's get into it!

Sorcerer Stats Priority

Stats Priority

In this section of our Sorcerer guide, we'll present the most important stats and how to prioritize them.

Each primary stat in Diablo 4 is another way of enhancing your class further. The offensive effects of each stat will differ depending on which character you are playing. In terms of Primary Stats for Sorcerers, the priority should be the following:

Sorcerer Offensive Stats Priority: Intelligence > Willpower > Dexterity

Sorcerer Defensive Stats Priority: Intelligence > Strength > Willpower > Dexterity

Following up in our Diablo 4 Sorcerer Guide, we'll present the skill tree & skill groups and how to enhance the proficiency of your abilities.

Sorcerer Skill Tree

Skill Tree

In the following section of our guide, we'll present the Diablo IV Sorcerer Skills, ability groups, and enhanced versions of them.

The Sorcerer class in Diablo 4 has 24 different skills distributed in six categories:

  • Basic Skills
  • Core Skills
  • Defensive Skills
  • Conjuration Skills
  • Mastery Skills

Following up, we'll dive deep into each category of skills and their importance!

Active & Passive Skills

Active skills are abilities that are used by different characters and monsters. Sorcerer's active skills can be acquired from any abilities group in the tree.

Passive skills are permanent buffs/effects added to a specific skill or group of skills. A Sorcerer's passive ability is always active and modifies the attributes of the character/skills or increases the capabilities of a specific element.

Basic Skills

Enchantment Slots

The Sorcerer Unique Class Mechanic has two spots where you can place skills to enhance their effects; you can use these slots for active skills to gain passive abilities.

If you place an active skill in the Enchantment Slot, the ability can no longer be used as an active, but your character will gain a secondary bonus power. The bonus from the Enchantment slot is very significant, and it can optimize your build, to make it easier to use or more potent.

Enchantment slot mechanic unlock

All the Sorcerer's spells in Diablo IV use a different element type. The unique class mechanic must be unlocked at level 15 through a Class-Specific quest called "Sorcerer: Legacy of the Magi":

  • Pin the task in the quest menu and return to the south of Nevesk (where you have started the Act I campaign).
  • Meet with a Sorcerer named Mordarin, and accept his mission to retrieve the Forgotten Codex.
  • Complete the nearby dungeon, loot the marked chest, and bring the book back to Mordarin.
  • Enter the requested cabin and interact with the four braziers. Mordarin attempts to harness the elements, but he mistakenly summons demons instead. Kill all the enemies, turn in the quest, and you have the first Diablo 4 Sorcerer Enchantment slot for your level 15 character.

Note: We have no information about the level 30 slot because the leveling during the Beta Phase was 25. As soon as we have more details on the subject, we will update the topic about How to unlock the Second Enchantment Slot in Diablo IV!

This sums up everything regarding Sorcerer Class Talents in D4. Moving on, we'll present a quick introduction to how to approach this class and how to improve your character.

How to play Sorcerer in Diablo 4

The Sorcerer is one of the most powerful solo classes in Diablo IV. As we tested in the Beta, there was nothing you couldn't solo on this character except the World Bosses. To improve your DPS and survivability, you must use gear with good affixes that boost your character, such as:

  • +% Core Skill Damage
  • +% Ranks to Core, Conjuration, or Mastery Skills (depending on your playstyle)
  • +% Crit Strike Chance
  • +% Damage to your chosen Element

Additional attributes that could work, but they are not as important as the ones listed above are:

  • +% Skill Damage
  • +% Movement Speed
  • +% Crit Strike Damage

Sorcerer Leveling Skills

The best leveling skills in the sorcerer's gameplay depend significantly on the element chosen. Below you have a setup of skills for each one separately:

Cold – Frost Bolt, Ice Shards, Ice Armor, Frost Nova, Blizzard & Deep Freeze.

Fire – Fire Bolt, Incinerate, Fire Shield, Hydra, Firewall & Inferno.

Lightning – Spark, Chain Lightning, Teleport, Lightning Spear, Ball Lightning, Unstable Currents.

Sorcerer Leveling Talents

The best leveling talents are extremely powerful and define the overall playstyle of your build. Every talent group has a requirement that needs to be met before allocating any of them to the skill tree:

  • Core Talents: Requires 2 skill points to be allocated in the skill tree.
  • Defensive Talents: Requires 6 skill points to be allocated in the skill tree.
  • Conjuration Talents: Requires 11 skill points to be allocated in the skill tree.
  • Mastery Talents: Requires 16 skill points to be allocated in the skill tree.
  • Ultimate Talents: Requires 23 skill points to be allocated in the skill tree.
  • Capstone Talents: Requires 33 skill points to be allocated in the skill tree.

Regarding leveling, we recommend using the Elemental Attunement Talent for cooldown reset, the Glass Cannon for more DPS output, and Protection for barriers. There are a couple of talents that we recommend for specific elements, such as:

Cold Element Talents

  • Hoarfrost: You deal more damage to enemies the more Chilled they are, up to x6%/x12%/x18% while they are Frozen.
  • Frostbite: You deal x3%/x6%/x9% more damage to Frozen or Vulnerable enemies, and x6%/x12%/x18% more damage to enemies who are both Frozen and Vulnerable.
  • Permafrost: Frost Skills deal x5%/x10%/x15% increased damage to Elites.
  • Icy Touch: You deal x4%/x8%/x12% increased damage to Vulnerable enemies.

Fire Element Talents

  • Inner Flames: Your Pyromancy Skills deal x8%/x16%/x24% increased damage after you haven't taken damage for 3 seconds.
  • Devouring Flames: Your Pyromancy Skills deal x1%/x2%/x3% increased direct damage for each source of Burning on an enemy, up to x4%/x16%/x36%.
  • Soulfire: Fireball and Meteor have 1.5%/3.0%/4.5% increased chance to Critically Strike per enemy hit.

Lightning Element Talents

  • Shocking Impact: Every time you Stun an enemy you deal 15%/30%/45% Lightning Damage to them.
  • Conduction: Critical Strikes with Shock Skills increase your Attack Speed by 5%/10%/15% for 2 seconds.
  • Vyr's Mastery: Close enemies take x{#}% more damage from your Shock Skills and deal x{#}% less damage to you.

Sorcerer Leveling Build

A build is more important in the endgame than in leveling, but we found some examples of high-quality items that you must use as a Sorcerer:

Firewall Hydra Sorcerer Build

  • Serpentine (Multiple Slots) You may have one additional Hydra Active, but Hydra's duration is reduced by x%.
  • Flamewalker (Boots): Coming in contact with your Firewall grants x% movement speed for 4 seconds.
  • Engulfing Flames (Weapon): When enemies are afflicted with more Damage over Time than their total life, you deal x% increased damage to them.
  • Conflagration (Weapon): While channeling Incinerate, your Burning damage is increased by x%.

Lightning Sorcerer Sorcerer Build

  • Unbroken Tether (Focus): Chain Lightning has a 31% chance to chain up to 2 additional times
  • Splintering Energy (Ring/Amulet): Lightning Spear has a 30% chance to spawn an additional Lightning Spear on cast.
  • Recharging (Ring): Each time Chain Lightning bounces off you, you gain four mana

Sorcerer Rotation

The Sorcerer Rotation is very dependent on your Mana resource generation. The basic skills are very weak, mostly used to apply debuffs on targets or reset cooldowns.

The rotation itself is effortless: use each skill when it comes out of cooldown and try to maintain the mana with the help of abilities, upgrades & legendary aspects.

This wraps everything regarding the basics of the Sorcerer Playstyle in Diablo IV. Now let's check out the gear particularities and what stats you should primarily focus on for your character.

How to gear a Sorcerer in Diablo 4

Item Slots

Sorcerers in Diablo 4 can equip a total of ten items in the following item slots:

  • Head
  • Chest
  • Gloves
  • Pants
  • Boots
  • Amulet
  • 2x Rings
  • Two-Handed Weapon (or) One-Handed Weapon + Focus

Note: As a reminder, please remember that you can use Wands & Daggers equipped with a specific Focus to help your character have an additional Legendary Power, depending on how many aspects you need to make the build work.

Sorcerer Primary Stats

In Diablo IV, the stats are divided into two categories; the class you use determines the benefits you gain by increasing a specific stat. The bonuses for Sorcerer Primary Stats in Diablo IV are the following:

Offensive Effects

  • Intelligence – +0.1% Skill Damage per point.
  • Willpower – +0.1% Resource Generation per point.

Best Weapon for Sorcerers

Wands & Daggers equipped along with a specific Focus helps your character have an additional Legendary Power, depending on how many aspects you require for your build.

As soon as we have specific weapons for particular builds, we will update the section for the best Sorcerer Weapon in Diablo 4.

Sorcerer Best Armor Pieces

When using a specific build, you want to look for particular pieces of equipment with any of the required legendary aspects. Any Sorcerer build depends on skills, so your gear improvement upgrades the efficiency of your DPS & survivability.

The aspects either help you regenerate mana, deal more damage, or receive less damage from enemies.

Best Gems for Sorcerers

A perfect addition for survivability or DPS increase would be socketing your gear with proper gems to buff your active or passive skills:

  • Ruby on Weapon for Increased Mana Regeneration.
  • Sapphire on Weapon for Critical Strike Chance against Crowd Controlled Enemies.
  • Emerald on Weapon for Increased damage output while fighting with Elite Enemies.
  • Diamond on Jewelry for Resistances.
  • Topaz on Armor for Damage Reduction.
  • Skulls on Armor for Healing Capabilities.
  • Amethyst on Armor for Damage over Time(DoT) reduction.

Now that you've learned how to gear your character, it's time to check out some of the best Sorcerer builds in Diablo 4.

Best Sorcerer Builds

When going for the best Sorcerer Build in Diablo 4, combining and carefully selecting the skills that we use is very important. We are currently testing the best Sorcerer Builds to update the section with the strongest abilities and a mixture of skills.

Meanwhile, let's cover the best Sorcerer Leveling and Farming Builds that we used during the Beta Testing.

Best Leveling Build

One of the best leveling builds for the Sorcerer in Diablo IV seems to be the Lightning build, that has a huge advantage over other classes or elements. We used the following Skills and upgrades while leveling, and we went through the content like a breeze:

Basic Skill & Mana Generator - Arc Lash - with the Glinting upgrade for cooldown reduction per stunned enemy.

Core Skill - Chain Lightning - with Greater Chain Lightning upgrade for more damage per enemy hit.

Defensive Skill - Teleport - with the Mystical upgrade for more DPS output from the Crackling Energy ability.

Conjuration Skill - Lightning Spear - with the Invoked Lightning Spear upgrade for stacking critical strike chance.

Mastery Skill - Ball Lightning - with the Mage's Ball Lightning upgrade for extra DPS

Ultimate Skill - Unstable Currents - with the Prime Unstable Currents upgrade for more attack speed while ultimate is active.

This build has a very high clear speed and DPS output, slaying bosses in seconds without any legendary powers or items.

Best Farming Build

At the moment, we haven't found a build that would allow faster farming of the items or materials you need. As soon as we have a specific build in place, we will update the section with the best Sorcerer Build for Farming in Diablo 4.

  • Defensive Legendary Aspects
  • Offensive Legendary Aspects
  • Resource Legendary Aspects
  • Utility Legendary Aspects
  • Mobility Legendary Aspects

Legendary aspects can be imprinted on Rare or Legendary items at the Occultist, and after imprinting, the following results can occur:

  • Rare Items turn into Legendaries + they keep the same stats that were previously on the item.
  • Legendaries will overwrite their aspect with the new one.

Certain Legendary aspects are exclusive to a single class, while some are available to multiple characters. The Codex of Power aspects remain in the book indefinitely, and the imprinted item consumes the extracted Legendary Aspects.

BiS Gear for Sorcerer in D4

In this section of our Sorcerer guide, we'll present the Best in Slot Gear for your character and how to acquire it.

The most crucial point in acquiring the best armor and weapons for your Sorcerer is that you don't need to farm a perfectly rolled Legendary piece. You can transfer any legendary ability/aspect into a rare item. Legendaries have four affixes that make them more powerful.

You can create perfect items by rolling rare items with your desired aspect. We recommend gathering materials while leveling, but save them for the end game crafting.

Note: The Codex of Power has the lowest possible roll of the legendary aspect.

Sorcerer Paragon Board

Paragon Board

In this section, we'll present the Sorcerer's Paragon Board, its levels, and how to acquire them.

Once you reach level 50, you start gaining paragon points. At each level beyond that, you will gain four paragon points, expecting 200 Paragon Points at the maximum level.

At level 50, you will receive a starting paragon board (each class will start with a suitable board for them). You assign your points moving closer to the gate tiles; when you reach one of those, you will attach a new paragon board to your existing one.

As you can see, the Paragon Board represents one of the end game progression systems in Diablo IV.

Sorcerer Glyphs

In addition to the different tile types, glyphs can be slotted into paragon sockets. Glyphs are items found throughout the sanctuary and in dungeons. When a glyph is socketed into your board, you will gain various benefits based on the number of active tiles within the Glyph's radius.

Glyphs have different qualities, such as magic or rare, and they can be leveled up to increase their bonuses and the radius of their effect, allowing them to draw powers from more active tiles.
